Description
This is a circular walk starting and finishing in the Cupar, fluthers car park, east end of the town. It is best to start the walk in the early afternoon as the main visitor attractions are only open then. Head through the town of Cupar towards the train station and then turning onto the Ceres road. The town ends with the cemetery and golf course, and then there is an obvious kissing gate into trees and a footpath sigh for Ceres.
The Moor Road is typical of older routes in the preturnpike days when boggy valley bottoms were avoided. The shady climb is pleasant and the path runs down to meet the main road of Ceres. Continue down into the village, an old, trim place and opposite Meldrum's Hotel, turn up Curling Pond on to Kirk Brae. Then head down to rejoin Main Street and onto a crossroads by the old Coaching inn. Cross to the High Street and pass the Fife Folk Museum. Beyond the Museum, walk down the lane and over the cobbled 17th Century Bishop's Bridge. At the south end of the car park, Woodburn road leads off left of the row of cottages to a quiet lane.
As you climb through the fields, hill of tarvit rises clear. Turn right around the walled-off house to follow the drive out to a tarred road. Cross the road for a continuation of the path. Turn right at the next junction and down to a ford/arched packhorse bridge then up again to reach a road. Turn right, and a few minutes walk leads to the east drive of Hill of Tarvit Mansion. Leave the mansion by the east drive again turning left again, after 500m, left again up the drive to Whitehill. Pass the house and skirt right of the farm, pass cottages and the edge of a conifer stand, enjoying fantastic views right up to the Angus Coast. Go through the right-hand side of two gates and take a path down the field edge to rejoin the Moor road back in to Cupar.
