Description
This walk called the Fungarth Walk passes through Fungarth (pronounced 'foonart') and Haughend and leads out from Dunkeld to Loch of Lowes.
The paths which were once old highways pass through open country, offer pleasant walking and views of Loch of Lowes and the surrounding hills. In May the woodland floor is covered in bluebells The lower slopes of the hill are home to a thriving population of juniper trees, one of the three native Scottish conifers and now relatively uncommon in Scotland. Before arriving at Loch of the Lowes, the track runs along the western most part of the scenic and hilly Dunkeld and Birnam Golf Course, from where there are good views of the loch.
Taking in ancient Caledonian pine forests to varied deciduous woodlands along the way, this walk is a favourite autumnal jaunt thanks to the vibrant foliage on display and the end reward is a glimpse of the osprey family at their summer home at the Scottish Wildlife Trust Loch of the Lowes Visitor Centre. If you are lucky you may even have seen the adult pair on the way as they fish for food in the Tay to feed their chicks back at the nest.
Fungarth Hill Walk is part of the Dunkeld and Birnam Path Network. An excellent and informative leaflet, with details of this route and seven other walks in the area, is available from Dunkeld Tourist Information Centre at a bargain price of just 50p.
