Description

A mountain challenge if ever there was one - a circuit of An Teallach ranks as one of the best mountain days in the UK on a mountain regularly voted by walkers as Britain's best. The views over the coast and the surrounding mountains are superb.

Towering above Little Loch Broom, the jagged outline of An Teallach is a well-known landmark in Wester Ross. Whilst the ascent of the two Munros on it can be undertaken relatively easily from Dundonnell, a traverse of the tops including the pinnacles of Corrag Buidhe are an altogether more demanding outing, but one that is highly recommended for those confident in scrambling. (A path traversing below the pinnacles on their west side gives an easier alternative to the most difficult bits, although a bit of a head for heights is still required on the approach).

Access Info

There is a lay-by offering parking immediately opposite the start point, which is on the A832 a few hundred metres east of Dundonnell. If this is full then there is another parking area 100m east. There is a bus service past here but it is fairly infrequent and not particularly useful for day trips here, although you could use it to reach Dundonnell and do this walk whilst staying there.

Additional Info

All mountain scrambles come with an appropriate safety warning, but this route deserves it more than most. Apart from the Cuillin of Skye, Liathach and the Aonach Eagach ridge, no other British mountains offer this amount of scrambling and whilst it may be straightforward to seasoned mountaineers, wet or winter conditions can make this route quite hazardous and there have been a number of fatalities here in poor conditions.
