Description

The full walk is a superb walk through one of the wildest areas of Scotland. It could be completed as a day trip by very fit walkers, but it is better to split it over two days. The second part of the walk is described seperately.

This walk takes you right through the heart of Letterewe and Fisherfield and through some grand mountain scenery. This is probably Scotland's greatest wilderness. Although primarily on good paths and not crossing any mountain summits, it is a long route through a remote area and without any escape routes so it should not be undertaken unless you have the relevant skills. The ability to navigate is particularly important as, although a description is given here, there are places where the path is not easy to follow, particularly in mist.

Access Info

There is a lay-by offering parking immediately opposite the start point, which is on the A832 a few hundred metres east of Dundonnell. If this is full (as the starting point for An Teallach it can be) then there is another parking area 100m east. There is a bus service past here though it is fairly infrequent, but with a bit of planning it can be used to get you to or from the other end of the walk at Poolewe.

Additional Info

If doing it over two days (recommended) there is bothy accommodation at either Shenevall or in the barn at Carnmore. Carnmore Barn is more basic but better-placed near the halfway point. Shenevall Bothy can be quite busy, particularly on bank holiday weekends. There are also numerous good sites to camp along the route.
