Strathpeffer - Knockfarrel - Dingwall

Distance Approximate Time Height Gain OS Map
5 kms 02:30 (hrs:mins) 250 metres Explorer 437: Ben Wyvis & Strathpeffer

Description

The walk begins at the Forestry car park at the western end of Strathpeffer. The first section is on broad paths, climbing through forest. From the upper limit of the forest the route goes up on to the Knockfarrel ridge by a grassy path. The ridge is like an upturned ship, the route going along the keel. There are no obstructions to the good views in all directions. The final part of the walk is a gradual descent to Dingwall. The walk requires two cars or making use of the bus service between Dingwall and Strathpeffer. The paths are generally good but boots are advised.

Access Info

The car park at Strathpeffer is at the western end of the village, (478575) on the A834. The turn-off to it is signposted, but since it is at a bend it's easily missed. At Dingwall, if you use two cars, it's best to use the main car park in the town centre. There are regular buses on the Inverness - Dingwall - Strathpeffer route.

Additional Info

At the highest point of the Knockfarrel ridge is the site of a 3,000 year-old vitrified fort.
