Description

Bottlenose Dolphin

Spey Bay reserve is part of the largest area of coastal shingle in Scotland. Several different walks are available of varying lengths and duration:

Short Walks

(2.25 miles/3.6 kms) From the Moray Firth Wildlife Centre at Tugnet on the east side of the river, follow the path up river alongside alder woods. Turn right by SWT reserve sign and head for bridge over the river. Excellent views both up and down river from the bridge. Return by same route to Wildlife Centre.
(2.1 miles/3.3 kms) From Lein car park at the west end of Kingston, follow the path west through the reserve keeping to sea side track to see the magnificent shingle beach. Turn left at the end of the reserve before the fenced military area. Take the next left back through the gorse to complete the circular walk.

Longer Walk

These walks can be combined for a long walk (just under 9 miles). From the bridge, carry on towards Garmouth. Leave the railway path and, once in Garmouth turn right onto the road for Kingston. In Kingston, at just under one mile along this road, there is a car park at 'birdwatcher's corner', which looks out over the salt marshes and the river mouth towards the starting point at Tugnet. Take the short road which follows the line of the beach to reach the Lein. Alternatively, turn back at 'birdwatcher's corner' for an intermediate walk of approximately 6.5 miles/10.4 kms.

Access Info

Spey Bay lies 8 miles north-east of Elgin, at the end of the B9015 (Kingston) or the B9014 (Tugnet). The starting point for these walks is the Moray Firth Wildlife Centre or Lein car park.

Additional Info

The Ice House at Tugnet is reputedly the largest industrial ice house in Scotland. It is open during the summer months and entry is free.
