Nairn to Cawdor to Nairn

Distance Approximate Time Height Gain OS Map
16.1 kms 05:00 (hrs:mins) 50 metres Explorer 422: Nairn & Cawdor

Description

Cawdor Castle near Nairn

This walk follows the River Nairn closely and begins at Nairn harbour. The path is not always evident on the Ordnance Survey map because it is a fairly new route, but green marker posts define it. There are no difficult bits (but see additional information) though boots are advised as parts can be very muddy.

At Cawdor the Castle (made famous in Shakespeare's 'Macbeth') is open to the public, and the walk, plus a visit to the Castle makes for an enjoyable full day out. There is also a choice of five waymarked nature trails starting either at the Flower Garden or by the Blue Bridge.

Access Info

To start the walk, in Nairn go to the harbour, cross the Bailey Bridge and turn right after a few metres to the car park. There are regular First Scotrail train services between Inverness and Aberdeen which stop in Nairn and there are also regular Stagecoach bus services from Inverness and Aberdeen. Find out more at the Aberdeenshire Council website

There are also local buses (Service Number 12 by Highland Country Buses) running from Inverness to Cawdor for those wishing to walk one way.

Additional Info

People not wishing to do the full walk can do either half; Nairn to Howford Bridge and return; or park at the Howford Bridge and walk to Cawdor.
