Inverarnie Esker Trail
| Distance | Approximate Time | Height Gain | OS Map |
| 4.5 kms | 01:30 (hrs:mins) | 100 metres | Explorer416: Inverness, Loch Ness & Culloden |
Description
As well as being a physically enjoyable walk it's also a geography / geology lesson, detailing the landforms seen en route and indicating how they were formed and are put to use. There are three walks, waymarked red, yellow and blue, so you can select a length to suit. We have covered all three here. The paths vary from the broad forestry track of the yellow route to the narrow grassy paths along the crests of the eskers elsewhere. The low-lying areas between eskers may be boggy in wet weather; boots are advised. This is an enjoyable family walk (with a request to keep dogs under control), with nice views of Strath Nairn.
Access Info
About five miles south of Inverness on the A9, turn off on the B851. The start of the walk is one mile on, on your left.
Additional Info
Eskers? You remember, the ridges of sand, gravel and boulders deposited by rivers flowing in melting glaciers. Strath Nairn is noted for its fine examples and few geology textbooks fail to have photographs of them. This walk is in a Site of Special Scientific Interest for that reason.
