Description
A gentle walk along a former railway line, at first along the River Dee, thereafter within the wooded grounds of Crathes Castle. It returns along the wooded route of the water pipeline supplying the city of Aberdeen.
The walk is mainly on the level. It passes through picturesque woodland and riverbank scenery. At Milton of Crathes there is a small craft village of shops, art gallery and restaurant. It continues through wooded paths in the grounds of the sixteenth century Crathes castle. The castle itself is open from April to October and its world famous gardens are open all year round. Its yew hedges date from 1702. An NTS shop and restaurant are also open during the season. After following another tree-lined pathway along the route of Aberdeens water supply, the walk returns to Banchory by short stretch through a built up area, then revisits the river bank.
