Description

Scottish Mining Museum

This walk begins and ends at the Scottish Mining Museum, in Midlothian, a 5-star visitor attraction offering a fascinating glimpse into the world of the coal miner. Formerly the Lady Victoria Colliery, it is the most intact model colliery complex of its date (1890) and features a community garden, developed by the BBC Beechgrove Garden team. The mine scenes for the film 'Margaret's Museum' starring Helena Bonham-Carter were filmed here in 1994 and the film is available on DVD.

On leaving the main entrance, turn right crossing the road and walk up Stobhill Road, and turn into Monkswood Road. In the course of this route, you will encounter many historic buildings associated with the mining industry. Among them the single storey brick cottages following the completion of the Lady Victoria pit in 1896. These streets are simply numbered First Street to Tenth Street and as there are no street signs at the top of the streets, you?ll have to count your way to Seventh Street!

From Park Road turn into Welfare Park with wonderful views of Arthur's Seat and the Pentland Hills, and the Newtongrange War Memorial. There will also be an opportunity to visit The Dean Tavern, which is one of the last 'Gothenburg' pubs (so named following a model imported from Gothenburg in Sweden where the pub hands over a percentage of its profits for local cultural purposes), still operating in Scotland.
