The Ascent of Cockleroy

Distance Approximate Time Height Gain OS Map
1 kms 00:45 (hrs:mins) 60 metres Explorer 349: Falkirk, Cumbernauld & Livingston

Description

Beecraigs country park, where this walk starts and finishes is just south of Linlithgow and offers many activities and has a good network of paths giving good walking.

Towards the north-west corner of the park and standing above the forest is Cockleroy Hill which is also the site of a Bronze Age fort known as Wallace's Bed or Wallace's Cradle.

The path starts from a small car park just inside the forest and follows a short trail to the summit where there are excellent views over the Forth valley. On a good day the view can stretch from Arran in the west to East Lothian in the east. Return by same route.

Access Info

The walk can be started from the town of Linlithgow by following the minor road uphill towards Beecraigs country park but a shorter alternative, which avoids any road walking is possible by driving up this road to a car park just into the forest.

Additional Info

An excellent walk for families with young children - the climb is short and not too steep.
