Description

Looking over the bay to Dunstaffnage Castle Route map

Start in the centre of the village by the bridge over Lusragan Burn and take the path beside the burn, passing under the railway viaduct. Go through a metal gate and then head uphill and continue along the lane. Bear left through the valley of Lusragan Burn passing an ancient hillfort and after 2 miles, just before the top of a slight rise, turn left on to a track and go through a metal gate. The track winds downhill and crosses the bridge over the burn. Follow the clear, well-surfaced track across open country to Lower Loch, the first of the Black Lochs and then carry on past the Middle Loch. Do not go through the metal gate before the farm but keep ahead by a wall and wire fence on the right.

Where the wall turns right, bear right and walk across a field corner (keep to the wire fence). At the fence corner bear right and head across rough and boggy ground, by ruined buildings to a metal gate. Through the gate and keep along a grassy track above Middle Loch (Ben Cruachan looms overhead). Go through another gate and continue above Upper Loch and the path climbs and bears left away from the water. After bearing right, go through a metal gate, over heathery moorland and superb views of Loch Etive will open up to you. Descend to a metal gate and continue to Achaleven Farm. Pass to the left of the farm, under the railway bridge and you are back in Connel.
